Plants and Soils

I've worked very extensively with a huge range of tropical sub-tropical and temperate crops including:

  • Rice
  • Bananas
  • Oil Palm
  • Date Palm
  • Indian vegetables
  • Ghanaian vegetables
  • British vegetables
  • Vines/wine grapes
  • Agave
  • Maize
  • Almonds
  • Pineapples
  • Beetroot
  • Cocoa
  • Pepper
  • Grasslands
  • Tree Legumes
  • Agroforestry
  • Organic systems/certification
  • Hydroponic vegetable/floriculture systems
  • Zero external input systems
  • Soya
  • Papaya
  • Cashew
  • Pumpkins

and many others...

I tend to work from the starting point of working out the soil and moisture regime and matching the system to those. In tropical environments, with their old heavily leached soils and distinct soil chemistry, understanding the soils is the key to delivering successful and sustainable cropping improvement. A very large part of my work has been and continues to be in zero/minimal chemical input systems, ie no fertiliser or pesticides and agriculture is only long-term sustainable if it looks after the environment.

I'll be adding in appropriate training materials to download and links, as the work in Laos develops. Meanwhile I'm happy to advise projects as much as I'm able to, with issues of tropical/subtropical and temperate cropping/soils systems; just head to the contact me page and drop me a line.
